Ouma's Favourite Days of The Year

What even is a marketing calendar if it doesn't include national days of the year?

These fun days can be a great opportunity to connect with customers and inject some humour into your brand. One company we think absolutely nails this every time is Innocent. Think a business selling smoothies couldn't possibly incorporate National Penguin Awareness Day into their marketing plans? Think again!

From International Women's Day to National Doughnut Day, there are a plethora of fun and meaningful events that you can take advantage of in your social media marketing.

The Ouma team have selected their favourite days of the year that you can utilise in your marketing efforts, including ideas for how to make the most of each day. Whether you're a small business owner or a marketing professional, these ideas will help you create engaging and effective campaigns that will enable you to better connect with your team, clients, and your social media audience.

First up, Rachel's pick is International Women's Day (8th March). This day is a great opportunity for your business to highlight the achievements of all women within your company. Rachel added "Empowering women isn't just about breaking barriers, it's about building a world where everyone has the opportunity to reach their full potential, free from discrimination and oppression. Let's celebrate the strong, powerful, and inspiring women in our lives and work together towards gender equality."

It's no secret that the Ouma team are besotted with our pets, therefore it should come as no surprise that Amy is a big fan of National Pet Day (11th April). With two cats, a dog and a tortoise, Amy is a lover of all animals. Use this day to showcase the pets behind the brand - have your team share pictures of their pets and create a fun, interactive quiz on social media by asking your followers to pair the pets with their owners!

"Anyone for a cuppa?" These words are spoken approximately 1,040 times a year at Ouma HQ (we did the maths), so it's no wonder it's the nations favourite beverage. Ross might love a good cup of English Breakfast tea, but getting him to make his own is no easy feat! This year on National Tea Day (21st April) share the biscuits your employees enjoy most with their brew, or ask your followers to tag their tea crew and tell you how they like their tea!

Katie's pick is Earth Day (22nd April). This is the time for businesses to promote environmentally friendly products and services, as well as raising awareness about the importance of protecting the planet.

To celebrate, invest in a company-wide litter pick, plant a tree for each of your clients and employees, or take the time to re-evaluate your company's Environmental Policy and consider what improvements you will make. You could even take the time to do it all by utilising World Environment Day on 5th June too!

Who can resist National Doughnut Day? (2nd June). This delicious holiday is the perfect opportunity for businesses to treat their employees or customers to a something sweet! Grab a selection box from your local bakery and hand-deliver them for an extra special touch.

When something is as important as celebrating diversity and supporting our LGBTQIA+ peers, it's a delight that we can celebrate for the entire month of June! However, there is one specific celebratory day that is connected with Pride (28th June). To celebrate #prideatwork, Emily recommends attending a Pride parade or event! It's the start of showing up as an Ally while educating yourself and your colleagues on the history of pride.

Question: How inclusive is your company culture? Do you have a Pride at Work Employee Network, or resources that promote LGBTQIA+ inclusivity? These are the first steps to creating a workplace where LGBTQIA+ employees feel valued and accepted.

About 71% of the earth's surface is covered by water, so it's vital that we all do what we can to help protect our oceans and keep them clean! World Oceans Day (8th June) is an opportunity for businesses of all sizes to raise global awareness of the impact human actions have on the ocean. Olivia suggested businesses take part in a beach clean and make a pact to avoid single-use plastics to honour the day. Liv added, "Even though it's imperative businesses make an effort to reduce their impact on the world's oceans, World Oceans Day is also a reminder to breathe in the salty sea air and marvel at the beauty of our oceans."

Yet another beverage we can't quite function without, International Coffee Day (1st October) is a firm favourite. Emma swears by her Monday morning caffeine boost to get her through the week!

On this day, order some ethically sourced coffee from your local provider, and either give them as gifts to your employees or clients, or store them in the staff kitchen for all to use.

Our self-confessed All Hallows' Eve enthusiast, Leah, has selected Halloween (31st October) as her favourite day of the year. From planning Halloween events for the city of Swansea, to celebrating the day itself in full goth glam, Leah has many a trick up her sleeve for creating spookily effective Halloween marketing campaigns. This year, consider opting for a costume contest or run a themed giveaway on your social platforms for the spooktacular day.

Being a Swansea-based marketing company, of course we had to add Beaujolais Day (16th November) to the list. Bethan loves any excuse to get dressed to the nines and celebrate in style. Beauj is the ideal day to don a sparkly dress and party until the early hours... and there's networking involved in some way (our boss told us to mention that bit).

Last on our list is International Men's Day (19th November), a very prominent day within the Ouma calendar, personally for our team and as a company, too.

Rhys has shared with us one of his favourite quotes by Ayn Rand - "A creative man is motivated by the desire to achieve, not by the desire to beat others".

It's crucial for us to remember that we still have a long way to go to accomplish the objectives of this poignant day.

  1. To promote positive male role models

  2. To celebrate men's positive contributions to society

  3. To focus on men's health and wellbeing

  4. To highlight discrimination against men

  5. To improve gender relations and promote gender equality

  6. To create a safer, better world

There you have it, our team's top days of the year! Now you know the way to our hearts, and how to bribe us should the need ever arise...
